This year, the dark winter days at Schiphol will be a little brighter and cozier! Starting Monday, December 2nd, you can enjoy three impressive light art installations scattered throughout Schiphol CBD. These works are part of the Light Art Collection, known from the Amsterdam Light Festival, and are a unique initiative by Schiphol Real Estate and Spot to bring extra ambiance to the winter months.

Absorbed by Light – Gali May Lucas (UK)
Location: Schiphol Boulevard, WTC Schiphol Airport entrance
Three figures sit next to each other on a bench, displaying the typical characteristics of smartphone users: their heads are bent, fingers typing and swiping, and their faces lit up by their phone screens. While their bodies are physically present, their minds are elsewhere. You can experience the way this affects others by taking a seat in between the figures of 'Absorbed by Light', designed by the British Gali May Lucas and executed by Berlin-based sculptor Karoline Hinz. Talking Heads – Viktor Vicsek (HU)
Locatie: The Square
As human beings we are capable of numerous facial expressions by the use of several dozens of muscles. It enables us to show all kinds of emotions to someone else, hoping that the other will understand us and react adequately. When you look sad, I am inclined to comfort you. When I laugh I invite you to join me in laughing. Communicating without using words. The two spectacular heads created by the Hungarian light artist Viktor Vicsek also show countless emotions and react to each other. Unlike people these Talking Heads don’t do it by means of muscles, but through all the possibilities of light. Per head some 4000 individually controllable LEDs provide different facial expressions and they conduct conversations by means of light. Read more

Two Lamps – Jeroen Henneman (NL)
Location: Evert van de Beekstraat, bij Starbucks
These two gigantic lamps are a wonderful sight. It looks like the lamps have escaped from the desks of one of the many offices in the area. But those who walk or bike by will quickly realise that they are not real lamps but flat drawings; simplified images of lamps created using lines of light. Read more
Why light art?
With Spot, we do everything we can to make Schiphol a pleasant and inspiring workplace. From the colorful street art we previously brought to the area to the pop-up park this summer, we love adding these delightful surprises to make Schiphol even more enjoyable.
This winter, the three light art installations bring something special. Not only are they visually stunning, but they also offer moments of peace and inspiration. Whether you’re on the go, working, or taking a stroll.
A warm treat in December and January
Starting December 12th, we’re adding even more cheer every Thursday. A food truck will be stationed at The Square, offering free Dutch doughnuts (oliebollen) or a warm drink when you show your Spot pass. It’s the perfect chance to warm up and connect with colleagues. Together, let’s make winter at Schiphol cozy and welcoming!
